When preparing a brief it's often helpful to consider the following:

Timescales. When do you need the job to be completed by?
Audience. Who are you aiming to reach?
Pointers. Have you seen anything recently which has left an impression on you? It could be anything from a bus advert to a website to a book cover - they can all help us understand how you're thinking a little better.
Budget. Do you have already have an idea of how much you need the project to be completed within?
Approvals. Who will be signing things off at your end?
